The Top Ten Most Romantic Cities in the World

Some of us are lucky and live in amazing, beautiful places that keep the spirit of romance alive and kicking. For the rest of us, a trip to a romantic city is a treat to be savoured, as much for the experience as for the chance to bring alive a date or recharge an existing relationship. Sometimes the choice of where to go is patently obvious, but you don’t always have to do that. Consider instead what makes a place romantic. Is it the number of places to go, or a traditional link with romance? Or is it related to breath-taking views, history and culture?

1. Paris – well of course it is, fabled in song, story and experience. The centre of Paris seems to unlock a new romantic backdrop every time you turn a corner. You might love a cruise along the Seine, or see the city spread out beneath you from the Eiffel Tower. From Notre Dame to the Moulin Rouge, Paris’ reputation as the City of Lights keeps drawing lovers from around the world.

2. Venice – another classic location, and rightfully so with breathtaking architecture, a busy and engaging café scene and of course those gondola rides through the canals. With bustling piazzas and hidden bridges to choose between, this historic city is perfect for a romantic break.

3. Sydney – for a totally different feel and a more active experience, the city of Sydney not only hosts a vibrant night life, but has stunning beaches and wineries that are recognised around the world. If you prefer a more outdoors experience for your romantic getaways, then Sydney is simply stunning.

4. Buenos Aires – deservedly renowned around the world for its nightlife, Buenos Aires has nightclubs that are packed until morning and everywhere you look you’ll see couples of all ages in love. The Tango originated here, and the passionate and sensual rhythms of the dance seem to be embodied everywhere you go.

5. Bath – a beautiful British city resonating with history and culture, and spas that will delight the senses. Whether you’re visiting as a history buff to see the Roman Baths from which the city got its name, or as book lovers keen to see where Jane Austen lived and wrote, this charming city has something for everyone.

6. Budapest – a favourite city of those who prefer their cafes and the delights of smaller streets with a world class music scene. Budapest is a charming location with an amazing riverside walk that has prompted some to call it the Paris of the East.

7. Bruges – for a quieter and more intimate weekend away, you can’t go far wrong with Bruges, with a largely untouched fairytale feel from its unspoiled architecture. Another city of canals, this historic and culturally rich city is unparalleled for beer brewing, cheese and chocolate.

8. Florence – back to Italy for a stunning location in the middle of the beautiful Tuscan countryside. Florence is well known as a centre for art lovers, but also boasts some of the most beautiful food and drink, as well as a well-loved market to stock your romantic picnic away from it all.

9. Edinburgh – the capital of Scotland is a bustling place full of energy, charm and no shortage of surprises around every corner. Come for the tea rooms, explore the pubs and investigate the history in a city that manages to hold you close and yet let you live.

10. Montreal – a rare treat mixing the best of old world charm and new world energy, Montreal has been called the Paris of North America. The Canadian city has parks and cafes everywhere, and also boasts some of the most wild and varied nightlife you could want. Spend the days picnicking in the parks, then dance your feet off all night.
