10 Essential Clothing Items That Every Man Should Own

Forget about Winter coming, it’s nearly Christmas and everyone knows it can be really hard to buy clothing items for guys. Styles vary and tastes can be highly subjective, but there are some absolutely guaranteed classic styles and items that just work. Whether you’re looking for the perfect gift for the man in your life, or looking to refresh your own wardrobe, you really can’t go wrong with these:

1. Plain, single coloured crewneck t-shirts – these really are some of the most versatile items you’ll own. Either you’ll be looking to go casual at some point, or just want something to wear as an extra layer as the temperatures fall, but either way some classic t-shirts without logos or slogans will fit the bill.

2. A dark wool jacket – dark colours like navy, black or grey cut a simple but elegant line when cut to just below your hip and look good with every combination of clothing and colours to lend that little bit of presence. Whether you’re bundling up against the cold or looking to offset brighter colours while you wear it open, these hard-wearing jackets are both stylish and practical.

3. Dark, straight legged trousers or jeans. Make sure they’re in top condition with no rips and tears, studs or fading. Avoid anything that has logos or patterns in it, and make sure they fit well – nothing ruins the look more than a saggy backside or bagginess around the thighs. Just avoid light greys.

4. A good business suit – you’re probably better going with navy as a colour as it will fit most skin tones and clothing options. Black suits tend to suggest funerals, and you’ll want to feel comfortable in a range of social events with this option in your wardrobe.

5. A good plain white shirt – it will go with everything in a range of situations, but especially as that reserve item if you generally prefer a more casual style and need to scrub up quickly for a date or important event.

6. A good pair of dress shoes. The classic black shoe is always a good start, but consider going with a lighter camel brown leather instead as it complements far more colours like greys, khakis and that navy suit we mentioned above.

7. A pair of converse sneakers – they’re versatile, casual and comfortable without looking rough around the edges. Make sure it’s a single solid and bold colour and you’ll have a go-to piece of footwear for getting out and about to live life to the full.

8. A good leather belt – preferably one that matches your shoes. Not only does it keep your trousers up, but it ties your colours and clothing together.

9. A simple dark tie. You don’t always need to wear a tie with your shirt, and there are plenty of arguments for a more relaxed unbuttoned collar both at work and play, but having a high quality simple tie will always prove a good choice. Good options are either solid greys and reds, or thick contrasting stripes.

10. A plain thick solid-coloured hoodie. It’s a great alternative to a sweatshirt and whether it’s a pullover style or zippered up the front it should be fitted no lower than the hips and no over-long sleeves, logos or writing at all.
